Franklin County Oyster Festival 2011 : St. George Island, Florida'a Forgotten Coast

The 3-day festival will take place on St. George Island and in Eastpoint, Florida during the Columbus Day weekend. The family festival highlights the county's proud seafood heritage, driven by the Apalachicola Bay oyster. The display of an oyster boat, a tonging demonstration, a shucking contest, and oysters served throughout the weekend will demonstrate the many ways that the oyster affects the way of life in Franklin County. Extensive education booths will show off the varied sea life, wildlife, and maritime history. Since the festival is held in Eastpoint and on St. George Island, visitors will experience the beauty of both the Apalachicola Bay and the Gulf of Mexico.

The festival will contain a number of activities in which festival-goers are invited to participate. These activities include a fishing tournament, 5K run, and kids' fun. Visitors are also invited to take nature walks in the State Park, climb the Cape St. George Lighthouse and browse the new Lighthouse Museum in the Keeper's Cottage, visit the new ANERR Nature Center, shop at unique local businesses, and eat scrumptious seafood (and more) at local restaurants. There will be free concerts on Friday evening, Saturday night, and three daytime concerts on Sunday. Seafood will be available for purchase throughout the weekend.
